FAQ

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a specialist in orthodontics, a type of dentistry concerned with crooked teeth and bite problems.

What does it mean to be a specialist in orthodontics?

After graduating as a dentist, you are enrolled in a further education program lasting 3 years at a university. After the final exam, you acquire your specialization approval.

Why is it so expensive?

The technical materials used in orthodontics are very expensive. The personnel needed to fit and service orthodontic appliances are specially educated and trained. The procedure, materials and x- ray equipment it takes to make a treatment plan are expensive, and planning takes time. Often other specialists are included in the process. The treatment duration is long and requires many control visits and adjustments.

Can I have the cost of the treatment covered by the government?

No, only if your malocclusion is caused by extreme growth development of the jaws. The private insurance company “Danmark” gives a minor subsidy for orthodontic treatment if you are a member, usually around DKK 2000. You will receive the subsidy after the treatment has concluded.

Will I save money on the treatment if I become a member of the private insurance company Danmark?

Not unless you are already a member.

What type of braces will I need?

That depends on the type and severity of the problem. Make an appointment with us!

How long will the treatment take?

An average treatment lasts about 1½ – 2 years with fixed appliances. After this, the final result is stabilized with a retainer you’ll use at night on the upper teeth. The lower teeth are stabilized with a thin wire that is glued on the back of your teeth.

Can I refer myself?

Yes, please use the reference questionnaire.

How much will it cost?

That depends on the severity of the problem. The price ranges from around DKK 10,000-55,000. Read more under prices. A consultation is necessary before we can give an estimate of the price. The final price will be determined after the treatment plan has been made.

How old should my child be in order to get orthodontic treatment?

That depends on the problem. Usually treatments around the age of puberty are ideal. We prefer to see the child as early as possible to assess the problem.

Can I get braces at any age?

Yes!  Make an appointment for a consultation.

Will I need to extract some healthy teeth?

If your teeth are severely crowded, some extractions may be necessary.

Will my face change?

Yes, sometimes, particularly the lower face. But this is usually part of the treatment plan.

Are there any hidden costs?

No, but remember that the last two years of treatment is passive. After the first year of passive treatment, maintenance of the retainer is your responsibility.

Does your clinic do anything other than braces?

Yes, we advise on treatment plans regarding malocclusions, we treat TMJ problems, and even make mouth guards, especially for people with braces.

Can you get “hidden braces”?

Yes, you can get the braces on the backside of your teeth (lingual braces).

What are the advantages of getting an orthodontic treatment?

Your bite will be more stable with optimal function. You’ll have a beautiful smile. Cleaning and maintenance of your teeth will improve. Damage to your teeth, gums, TMJ and jaw muscles due to malocclusion will end.

Can I get teeth-coloured braces?

Yes, for an additional fee.

Do the teeth stay straight after an orthodontic treatment?

Yes, but you need to use retainers at night – usually for 2 years, but in some cases longer.

Does it damage the teeth to have braces?

In some rare cases the roots of the teeth can become significantly shorter than before. This does not affect the vitality of the teeth or their function in the future.

What can you eat or not eat with braces on?

You can eat anything except very tough or hard foods. When you eat, you need to take care not to strain the braces unnecessarily.

Is it easier to get cavities with braces on?

Yes, it is because there are many more places for plaque to accumulate in a mouth with a fixed appliance. Having braces can also make it more difficult to get access to the plaque and remove it.

Are some people allergic to braces?

Yes, patients with a nickel allergy can have a reaction to braces.

I am allergic to nickel. Can I have braces anyway?

Yes, in this case we will use a different type of appliance.
